Chimney Cleaning & Repair
Fireplaces and chimneys are a great addition to any home, but they also come with their own unique maintenance needs and responsibilities. Increased use of your chimney during the winter means it is imperative to ensure your chimney is clean and in proper working order to avoid a chimney fire. Fireplaces and wood stoves are the second leading cause of home fires each year. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends getting your chimney cleaned and inspected annually. Having your chimney inspected and cleaned by our professional chimney sweeps eliminates the hazards associated with:
- Soot – a black flaky or powdery substance that is created by the incomplete burning of logs consisting of carbon and ash. Since carbon is highly flammable, soot increases the chance of a chimney fire.
- Creosote – smoke and vapor residue from wood that doesn’t burn completely, creating hard, flaky, and highly flammable deposits in your chimney liner. Your chimney should be cleaned when creosote or soot layers become thicker than ¼ inch.
- Glaze – a shiny, tar-like substance creating black puddles in your chimney. more difficult to remove than soot or creosote. Because glaze is more dense than soot and creosote, it is more difficult to remove and is a greater fire hazard. Glaze may also appear as icicle-like deposits hanging above your fireplace and should be removed when it exceeds 1/8 of an inch thick.
A dirty or obstructed chimney can be hazardous to the safety of your home and family.
