Creosote – smoke and vapor residue from wood that doesn’t burn completely, creating hard, flaky, and highly flammable deposits in your chimney liner. Your chimney should be cleaned when creosote or soot layers become thicker than ¼ inch.
Glaze – a shiny, tar-like substance creating black puddles in your chimney. more difficult to remove than soot or creosote. Because glaze is more dense than soot and creosote, it is more difficult to remove and is a greater fire hazard. Glaze may also appear as icicle-like deposits hanging above your fireplace and should be removed when it exceeds 1/8 of an inch thick.
